Manchester United ended the summer transfer window without signing a new left-back after refusing to commit to a deal they regarded as poor value, leaving manager Michael Carrick with Luke Shaw as his only senior specialist in the position.
The decision followed a late attempt to find a temporary solution, with United making an enquiry about Manchester City defender Rayan Aït-Nouri on Tuesday, September 1. The approach came after the Algeria international’s representatives had raised the possibility of a move earlier in the week.
However, City were only prepared to sanction a season-long loan if it included an obligation for United to buy the player. That condition did not suit United’s plans and the discussions quickly ended.
The episode reflected a broader strategy at Old Trafford. Rather than spend heavily on a permanent signing who was not considered a clear long-term answer, the club’s recruitment operation preferred either an affordable short-term arrangement or a player who fitted its future plans.

United had also explored Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde, but the Spanish club were understood to be interested only in a permanent sale. Balde subsequently indicated that he wanted to remain at Barcelona and compete for his place.
Lewis Hall was regarded as the preferred long-term target, yet Newcastle made clear that the England international was not available this summer. Sky Sports reported that Newcastle had rejected an earlier enquiry and that Hall still has three years remaining on his contract.
Ian Maatsen and Ferdi Kadioglu were among the other players checked by United, while Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly was not keen on leaving his boyhood club. A possible move for Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas also failed to materialise.
United’s reluctance to force through a deal came after an expensive summer rebuild in midfield. Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans were added, but the squad remains short of established cover at left-back.
Shaw, who is entering the final year of his contract, is expected to carry much of the responsibility during the opening months of the season. Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui can deputise, while Patrick Dorgu and academy prospect Harry Amass offer further alternatives, although neither is viewed as a like-for-like replacement for a natural left-back.
United had been aware of the problem since Tyrell Malacia’s departure left Shaw as the only senior specialist in the position. The club nevertheless chose not to repeat previous attempts to fill gaps with short-term signings who later offered limited value.
The approach may prove sound if Shaw remains fit and available. But with United competing in the Premier League and Champions League, another injury setback could leave Carrick exposed and place renewed pressure on the recruitment team ahead of the January window.
