Katie Zacharia has said she does not know when the next White House press briefing will be, as the new press secretary defended her position during an appearance on Fox & Friends.
Zacharia, who was speaking about her first week in the role, said she would work with President Donald Trump and the White House communications team to establish when she would next address reporters.
Asked whether she still had Mr Trump’s confidence, she pointed to the fact that she remained in the job and said she would work hard to meet expectations.
During the interview, Zacharia also spoke positively about her new position and the President. She criticised the mainstream media for concentrating on her rather than Mr Trump’s accomplishments, and highlighted what she presented as her role in announcing Kimberly Guilfoyle’s dismissal from the briefing room.
Her television appearance followed a difficult first week, during which questions were raised about her professional credentials. When asked where and when she had passed the bar examination, Zacharia was unable to provide an answer.
She had described herself as a lawyer, but it emerged that she had not passed the bar exam, although she graduated from Pepperdine University’s law school. The confusion prompted ridicule, despite the fact that the White House press secretary does not need a law degree to perform the role.
Zacharia declined to answer questions from the White House press corps earlier on Friday before appearing on the Fox programme.
She remains in the post for now and said she hoped to build greater confidence among those around her before the next briefing takes place.
