Chelsea are reportedly stepping up their pursuit of Jules Kounde, with manager Xabi Alonso keen to bring the Barcelona defender to Stamford Bridge during the January transfer window.
The France international is understood to be the club’s priority defensive target for the winter, and Chelsea have reportedly communicated their interest to both Kounde and Barcelona.
Chelsea’s pursuit of Jules Kounde faces a key decision
Alonso is said to be prepared to contact Kounde’s representatives personally as he attempts to persuade the 27-year-old to move to London.
The defender’s versatility is central to Chelsea’s interest. Kounde can operate at right-back or centre-back, giving Alonso greater flexibility while strengthening his options on the right side of defence.
Kounde has faced increased competition for regular involvement at Barcelona under Hansi Flick, with Eric Garcia and Joao Cancelo among those limiting his opportunities this season.
Chelsea have admired the Frenchman since his time at Sevilla and came close to signing him in 2022, before Barcelona secured his services.
Barcelona are reportedly willing to consider offers, but only if Kounde indicates that he wants to leave. That leaves the final decision largely with the player, while his contract runs until 2030 and gives the Catalan club a strong negotiating position.
Chelsea could therefore face a difficult negotiation if they are to complete the transfer in January. However, Alonso’s reported determination to secure Kounde suggests the club are ready to make a serious attempt to reshape their defence for the second half of the season.
