Google has introduced a password manager switching feature on Android that allows users to transfer passwords and passkeys between apps without first exporting them as a CSV file.
The new process is designed to make it easier to move to a different password manager while reducing the risk of sensitive information being exposed during migration.
Users begin the transfer from their new password manager, selecting the option to import or copy information from an existing app. Android identifies the password managers installed on the device and coordinates the exchange between them.
Before anything is moved, users can review the data involved and approve the transfer in a few taps. The system supports passkeys as well as passwords, meaning users should not have to register their passkeys again after changing apps.
Google said the feature is already available with selected partners, including 1Password, Bitwarden and Dashlane, as well as in its own password manager. Support for additional apps is expected to be added in future.
The password manager switching feature will work on devices running Android 8 or later.
