Fabian Hürzeler has distanced himself from speculation linking him with the Manchester United manager’s job, insisting that his attention remains on Brighton.
The 33-year-old has emerged as a potential candidate at Old Trafford as Michael Carrick comes under increasing pressure following United’s seven-game winless run and a 4-1 Champions League defeat by Como on Wednesday.
Fabian Hürzeler addresses Manchester United speculation
Asked about the reports at his Friday press conference, Hürzeler made clear that he was not considering a move away from Brighton.
“I’m fully focused on my job here,” Hürzeler said.
He added: “I’ve got no time to think about these rumours because we play every three days.”
Rather than add to the speculation, Hürzeler also offered his support to Carrick and praised the work carried out by the former United midfielder.
“I have a lot of respect for Michael Carrick and the job he has done at Manchester United the last season. He’s a great human being, a great personality, and I really respect him. There’s nothing more to say about that.”
Hürzeler is contracted to Brighton until 2029 and has overseen an impressive start to the season. The club remain confident of retaining his services despite the reported interest from Manchester United.
Manchester United face uncertainty over next manager
Hürzeler’s comments do not necessarily rule out a future move, but they leave United needing to look elsewhere if Carrick is unable to change the team’s fortunes.
The Brighton manager currently has stability, a clear recruitment structure and a squad playing progressive football. United, by contrast, are facing poor results, tactical uncertainty and growing questions over Carrick’s position.
Hürzeler could potentially reassess his situation next summer, when a departure from Brighton may be easier to arrange. For now, however, Manchester United may need to identify a candidate who is available immediately.
