NSW Police have extradited a 26-year-old man from Poland and charged him with murder over the death of 22-year-old Darcy Schafer-Turner in Sydney in 2023.
Detectives travelled to Poland in September with the assistance of Polish authorities before bringing the man to New South Wales, where he arrived on Friday. He was charged after landing, refused bail and is due to appear in the Bail Division Court on Saturday.
Mr Schafer-Turner’s body was found in May 2023, about a month after he disappeared, inside a large metal cabinet dumped in a creek near Macksville on the state’s mid-north coast.
Police began investigating after examining the supply of drugs in Caringbah, in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire. Detectives said that inquiry identified links to a missing person.
Court documents allege Mr Schafer-Turner was restrained at an apartment in Sydney while attempts were made to recover a $50,000 drug debt. He allegedly died after being placed in a chokehold, tied with duct tape and suffocating on his own vomit.
His close friend, Zachary Richard Fraser, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to six-and-a-half years in prison last year. Charles Dennis Turnbull, who was contacted to dispose of the body, later pleaded guilty to being an accessory to manslaughter.
In a statement, police said detectives had located a man allegedly involved in the murder who was living in Poland. The latest charge follows the earlier convictions linked to Mr Schafer-Turner’s death.
