A security guard has suffered a suspected broken foot after a driver allegedly drove a ute into a barrier near the Gold Coast 500 track in Surfers Paradise.
Police allege the 31-year-old man travelled the wrong way along a one-way street before attempting to pass through a security barrier at the intersection of the Esplanade and Staghorn Avenue at about 9pm on Friday.
Officers claim the driver deliberately struck the metal barrier, causing it to fall and injure a 40-year-old security guard from Labrador. The guard was taken to hospital with minor injuries, including the suspected fracture.
The incident occurred as the Gold Coast 500 got under way, with about 200,000 people expected to attend the event. Security personnel had reportedly asked the driver to provide identification before the situation escalated.
Members of the public tried to carry out a citizen’s arrest after the driver allegedly attempted to leave the scene, but were unsuccessful. Police later located the Surfers Paradise man nearby with assistance from the dog squad.
The man was bitten by a police dog during his arrest and taken to Gold Coast University Hospital for treatment. Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
