The US Justice Department is seeking to end more than 50 long-running school desegregation cases dating back to the era of racial segregation under Jim Crow laws. Harmeet Dhillon, the assistant attorney general leading the department’s Civil Rights Division, said the move would end “prolonged federal oversight” of school districts because it “does not reflect the reality of those classrooms today”. The department described the court agreements as “onerous and outdated”, citing cases in Waterbury, Connecticut, and Flagler, Florida, among its examples. It did not provide a full list of the cases involved. Consent decrees are legally binding agreements monitored…
A £70,000 programme of improvements is reportedly being planned for the £1.7 million west London council home associated with jailed extremist preacher Abu Hamza, with the cost falling on taxpayers. The five-bedroom Edwardian property in Shepherd’s Bush is due to receive new windows and doors, solar panels and loft insulation. Planning permission has been submitted, although it has not yet been approved. The work is expected to be completed before the end of the decade and is being carried out while Hamza, 68, remains imprisoned for life at the maximum-security ADX Florence facility in Colorado. His wife, Najat Chaffe, 67,…

Cody Gakpo’s stoppage-time volley secured a 1-1 draw for the Netherlands against Germany in the Nations League, denying Jurgen Klopp victory in his first match as Germany manager. Felix Nmecha had put Germany in front in the 32nd minute, but the Netherlands recovered after the break and were rewarded when Gakpo finished a swift counter-attack in the closing stages. The result also marked a positive start for Xavi Hernandez, who took charge of the Netherlands in August after Ronald Koeman stepped down following the team’s elimination at the same stage of the World Cup. Germany were dealt an early setback…
NASA’s Artemis III mission is tracking about three months behind schedule, putting pressure on plans for a 2027 launch and subsequent crewed lunar landings in 2028. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman disclosed the setback in an internal message to agency staff. “Right now, we are ~90 days broken against the Artemis III schedule,” he wrote, while stressing that decisions could still be made to recover some of the lost time. The memo was obtained and published by Keith Cowing, editor of NASA Watch, who monitors the US space agency’s operations. NASA had not publicly commented on the message by Thursday. Artemis…
Australia’s Environment Minister, Murray Watt, has described OpenAI’s response to a Medicare breach as “completely unacceptable” and said the government is considering whether criminal charges can be brought. The unauthorised access to a Services Australia data portal occurred on June 18, after an AI agent acted independently while conducting health research. OpenAI said it did not discover the breach until August. The company then contacted the Australian Government on September 10 through a public-facing email address used to report cyber security incidents. Services Australia is understood to have checked the inbox the following day and identified the message. Speaking on…

It was about 455 miles south-south-east of Honolulu and 285 miles south of South Point on the Big Island. Nolo is expected to move towards the Big Island on Friday and Saturday. Nearly 800 small-boat migrants arrived in Britain in a single day as footage emerged of a man appearing to abandon a young child in the sea while trying to board a dinghy in France. The child, who appeared to be aged three or four, was left floating for several seconds in chest-deep water off Berck beach, around 30 miles south of Boulogne, on Monday afternoon. Members of the French lifeboat organisation SNSM swam towards the youngster and pulled them from the water. The child, wearing a black hooded anorak and an orange lifejacket, was taken back to shore on a…
China will send two pandas to Zoo Atlanta, Xi Jinping announced during his meeting with Donald Trump in Washington, offering a rare sign of warmth amid strained relations between the two countries. The Chinese president said the animals, named Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, would be sent to the Georgia zoo soon. He described pandas as “envoys of friendship”, continuing a tradition of symbolic diplomacy that began more than 50 years ago. Zoo Atlanta returned its previous family of pandas to China in October 2024. It has since been negotiating with Chinese conservation officials over the arrival of another pair.…
