BART initially warned shortly after 5.20pm that the fire was affecting services on the Berryessa Line in the directions of Dublin/Pleasanton, Berryessa, Richmond and Daly City. An updated advisory issued after 6pm said the power outage had brought services to a complete halt between Fruitvale and Bay Fair. BART did not confirm whether the fire and the outage were connected. Passengers travelling between San Leandro and 12th Street were advised to use…
Anthony Albanese has condemned Pauline Hanson’s attack on his late mother, while Liberal frontbencher Andrew Hastie warned that his campaign against One Nation was only beginning. The Australian prime minister said he was “stunned” by comments in which Hanson criticised his mother, Maryanne Albanese, for living in public housing for many years. Speaking in Sydney, Mr Albanese said Hanson was entitled to criticise him but had no right to target his mother, whom he described as a kind woman who had endured a difficult life. “My mother was way out of Pauline Hanson’s league – way out of it,” he…

The two men suffered suspected gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. One person has died and dozens are missing after a ferry sank in Vanuatu, with the prime minister saying negligence and overloading may have contributed to the disaster. The cause of the ferry sinking has not been established, but the Vanuatu Government has raised concerns about possible failures in the vessel’s operation and the number of passengers on board. Search efforts and enquiries are focused on those still unaccounted for, while the death toll currently stands at one.
Collingwood defender Dan Houston and Channel Seven presenter Tyra Stowers are expecting their first child together, a baby girl due in March. The couple announced the news on social media with a video showing them relaxing in a park while holding pink balloons. “We can’t wait to meet you,” they captioned the post. Houston said becoming parents had always been part of their plans. “It was always part of the plan and something we both wanted to do in life. We both love boxers and we both love kids,” he told the Herald Sun. Stowers, the 7News weekend weather presenter,…
Ben Shelton will bid to end a 23-year wait for an American men’s singles champion when he faces Alexander Zverev in the US Open final at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday. The 23-year-old Atlanta native secured his place in the championship match by beating fellow American Frances Tiafoe 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 in Friday’s semi-final. It is Shelton’s first Grand Slam final and makes him the first American man to reach a major singles final since Andy Roddick at Wimbledon in 2009. Victory would also make Shelton the first Black American man to win the US Open men’s singles title…
Senior Reserve Bank of Australia officials are due to speak publicly as markets assess the likelihood of another interest rate hike later this month. The RBA’s chief economist, Sarah Hunter, will take part in a fireside chat at a Regional Australia Institute summit in Canberra on Monday. Governor Michele Bullock is scheduled to appear before a parliamentary committee on Friday. Their comments will be closely watched after recent statements from bank officials stressed that inflation remained too high and kept open the possibility of further increases. The RBA has already raised rates three times in 2026. Dr Hunter and deputy…
Never-before-seen photos of Steve Irwin have emerged showing the Crocodile Hunter at 27, with a mullet and cigarette, as he wrestled a crocodile in northern Queensland. The black-and-white images, shared by Rellie May Photography, were taken in Dalbeg in 1989 and show the wildlife conservationist wearing his familiar khaki shirt and shorts while working in the mud with local residents. The photographs have also drawn attention to the strong resemblance between Irwin and his son Robert, now 22. In one image, the younger Irwin’s facial features appear strikingly similar to those of his father. Rellie May Photography said the pictures…
Chef Kelvin Ebegboni served 300 free cheeseburgers to people experiencing homelessness in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighbourhood on Saturday, as part of a grassroots food initiative he launched to support communities across the Bay Area. Hundreds of people gathered at the corner of Jones and Eddy Streets for the Street Food Initiative event, where Mr Ebegboni handed out the burgers alongside volunteers and San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. Mr Ebegboni, who founded the Restoration For The Future Foundation, said cooking was the practical way he could respond to the hardship he sees around him. “A lot of people have different…
