As ADHD diagnoses continue to rise, doctors are urging people with problems such as poor concentration, restlessness and forgetfulness not to assume the condition is the only possible explanation. The same symptoms can be caused by anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, thyroid problems, medication side effects or other medical and psychiatric conditions. In some cases, ADHD may exist alongside another condition rather than account for all of a person’s difficulties. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder, meaning its symptoms typically begin in childhood and continue into later life. NHS guidance says an assessment should consider how difficulties have affected different areas, including…
A volcanic eruption at Mount Anak Krakatau has disrupted flights across Indonesia, causing delays and cancellations for Australian travellers, including at least six services to and from Perth Airport. The volcano, in the Sunda Strait near Lampung, erupted early on Sunday, sending ash across parts of southern Sumatra and towards Jakarta. Authorities temporarily halted operations at the capital’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport after ash was detected in the area. Indonesia’s transport ministry said the disruption had affected 467 flights and left about 150,000 passengers waiting across several airports. Soekarno-Hatta, Halim Perdanakusuma and airports in Lampung, Bandung and nearby areas were among…
Downing Street is believed to be recruiting a taxpayer-funded media adviser to support Marie-France van Heel, the wife of Prime Minister Andy Burnham, as she settles into life at No 10. The official would be expected to handle media enquiries and act as an assistant to Mrs van Heel, who has largely kept out of the political spotlight despite her husband’s long career. The proposed appointment comes after Mr Burnham entered Downing Street as Prime Minister, bringing renewed attention to the role played by his wife in public life. Mrs van Heel, who is known as Frankie, met Mr Burnham…
After decades in aerospace and finance, brothers Jerry and Peter Wong have swapped corporate life for part-time jobs at Disneyland Resort in California. Jerry, 66, works as a photographer at Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure, while Peter, 63, is an attractions host who helps operate rides and keep visitors safe. The brothers first began visiting Disney’s parks with their family in 1967. Nearly six decades later, the pair are back there regularly — this time in uniform and at work. Retirement at Disneyland Jerry spent more than 40 years at aerospace and defence company Northrop Grumman, where he worked…
Stephen Warnock has criticised Alejandro Garnacho and Tammy Abraham after Aston Villa’s attacking substitutes failed to inspire a breakthrough in the goalless draw at Hull City. Unai Emery’s side claimed their first Premier League point of the season at the MKM Stadium on Saturday, but remain without a goal after three matches. Villa had already been beaten by Brighton and Arsenal before being held by Hull. Warnock questions Aston Villa changes Former Villa defender Warnock was unimpressed by the impact of Garnacho and Abraham after they were introduced from the bench as Emery searched for a winning goal. “You may…
As the United States prepares to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, two Australians whose lives were changed by the atrocity are confronting memories that have never fully faded. Simon Kennedy will travel from Sydney to the US this week to honour his mother, Yvonne, who was killed aboard American Airlines Flight 77 when it crashed into the Pentagon on 11 September 2001. Yvonne, 62, had recently retired after 25 years with the Australian Red Cross and was travelling on what her family regarded as a holiday of a lifetime. Her name is among those of 10…
Andy Burnham is facing a renewed test from Britain’s bond markets, with borrowing costs surging ahead of his first Budget and raising the prospect of a fresh political confrontation with investors. The Prime Minister has sought to reassure the City that his government will act with “fiscal responsibility” after a sharp sell-off in government debt pushed the yield on 10-year gilts to 5.29 per cent — its highest level since 2008. ([theguardian.com](https://www.theguardian.com/business/2026/sep/02/burnham-tries-to-calm-bond-market-fears-as-sell-off-threatens-budget)) The rise threatens to reduce the room for manoeuvre available to Chancellor John Healey as he prepares the Budget for 28 October. Higher gilt yields increase the cost…
US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have arrived in Kyiv for talks with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, following a meeting with Vladimir Putin in Moscow as Washington seeks to revive stalled efforts to end the war in Ukraine. The visit on Sunday, September 6, is the first official trip to the Ukrainian capital by the two American negotiators during the peace process. It comes a day after they held more than three hours of closed-door discussions with the Russian president at the Kremlin. Mr Zelenskyy said Ukraine was ready for a “constructive” discussion with the US delegation, adding that Kyiv’s proposals…
Turkey has forecast that GDP growth will rise to 5% by 2029 as part of a new medium-term economic programme unveiled by Vice-President Cevdet Yilmaz in Ankara. The government expects the economy to expand by 3.3% in 2026, before growth strengthens to 4.2% in 2027 and 4.6% in 2028. The targets form part of Turkey’s economic roadmap for the 2027-2029 period. The programme also sets out a steep reduction in inflation, with the rate projected to fall to 21% in 2027, 13.5% in 2028 and 9% in 2029. Mr Yilmaz said the government expected inflation to end 2026 at 28.4%,…
Rachael Pearson kicked a dramatic late field goal to seal an unlikely Parramatta Eels victory over the Canberra Raiders in the NRLW at GIO Stadium. The experienced halfback held her nerve in the closing stages on Sunday, delivering the decisive strike as the Eels edged a tense contest in the nation’s capital. Parramatta had been forced to absorb sustained pressure from Canberra, but remained in contention before Pearson stepped forward when the match was there to be won. The result marked a memorable turnaround for the Eels, who had struggled for consistency earlier in the season. Pearson’s composure with the…
