Downing Street is believed to be recruiting a taxpayer-funded media adviser to support Marie-France van Heel, the wife of Prime Minister Andy Burnham, as she settles into life at No 10.
The official would be expected to handle media enquiries and act as an assistant to Mrs van Heel, who has largely kept out of the political spotlight despite her husband’s long career.
The proposed appointment comes after Mr Burnham entered Downing Street as Prime Minister, bringing renewed attention to the role played by his wife in public life.
Mrs van Heel, who is known as Frankie, met Mr Burnham while they were students at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. The couple married in 2000 and have three children.
She has worked in marketing and brand strategy, including senior roles at agencies and companies connected with major commercial and public campaigns.
It is understood that the No 10 role would be designed to provide practical and media support to the Prime Minister’s wife, rather than form part of Mr Burnham’s political staff.
