Rachael Pearson kicked a dramatic late field goal to seal an unlikely Parramatta Eels victory over the Canberra Raiders in the NRLW at GIO Stadium.
The experienced halfback held her nerve in the closing stages on Sunday, delivering the decisive strike as the Eels edged a tense contest in the nation’s capital.
Parramatta had been forced to absorb sustained pressure from Canberra, but remained in contention before Pearson stepped forward when the match was there to be won.
The result marked a memorable turnaround for the Eels, who had struggled for consistency earlier in the season. Pearson’s composure with the boot ultimately settled a contest in which neither side was able to establish clear control.
Pearson, who has built a reputation as one of the NRLW’s most reliable kickers, later reflected on the preparation and decision-making that enabled Parramatta to create the opportunity for the match-winning field goal.
The Eels’ defence also held firm in the closing minutes to deny the Raiders a final response, securing a victory that had appeared unlikely for much of the match.
