Fremantle residents have criticised a decision to delay long-promised improvements at Booyeembara Park, after the city’s updated 10-year financial plan moved several projects further into the future while setting aside about A$600,000 for a new skate park. The Fremantle Council approved the revised plan last week, with funding and delivery dates for the park’s wetlands, storytelling circle, amphitheatre and olive grove all altered. Under the previous financial plan, A$650,000 had been earmarked for the ephemeral wetlands and storytelling circle by 2028. That allocation has now been reduced to A$400,000, with work not expected to start until 2032. The A$700,000 amphitheatre…
Lee Hessey, the former chief executive of a Nottinghamshire academy trust, has been banned indefinitely from teaching after a professional conduct panel found that he called parents “scrotes, vermin and pond life” and sent offensive and discriminatory messages to colleagues. ([gov.uk](https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/teacher-misconduct-panel-outcome-mr-lee-hessey)) Mr Hessey led The Forge Academy Trust, which oversees six primary schools, and was also an interim headteacher. The Teaching Regulation Agency found that his conduct amounted to unacceptable professional conduct and could bring the teaching profession into disrepute. North Carolina has begun sending absentee ballots for the November election, putting President Donald Trump’s drive to impose new federal controls on postal voting on a collision course with the start of voting in the United States. The state’s 100 county election boards began mailing ballots to voters who had requested them on Friday, making North Carolina the first state to distribute absentee ballots ahead of the November 3 midterm election. The move comes as the Trump administration asks the Supreme Court to revive a United States Postal Service rule that would require states to meet new design and data-sharing…
Argentina’s President Javier Milei has threatened fresh sanctions against companies developing an oilfield near the Falkland Islands, while welcoming Donald Trump’s suggestion that the United States could reconsider its long-standing position on the disputed territory. In a nationally televised address, Mr Milei said Argentina would not accept further activity around the islands, which Buenos Aires calls the Malvinas. He also announced extra funding for a naval base in Tierra del Fuego, in the country’s far south, and plans to strengthen communications infrastructure in the region. “Argentina will not stand idly by,” Mr Milei said. “Any further advance on the Malvinas…
Georgina Rodríguez removed her reported $3 million engagement ring from Cristiano Ronaldo as she walked the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival on Friday, instead drawing attention to a striking collection of Chopard diamond jewellery. The model and social media personality appeared in Venice on September 4, where the pieces on her hands and ears provided the focal point of her red-carpet look. Rodríguez’s engagement ring, presented by the Portugal football captain, has attracted considerable attention since she announced the couple’s engagement. Its reported value has been estimated at around $3 million. At the 83rd Venice International Film Festival,…
GoPro founder and chief executive Nick Woodman has sought to reassure customers that the company will continue developing cameras for consumers and professionals following its proposed merger with Starman. In a message to the GoPro community, Woodman said the company’s focus on cameras would remain unchanged, describing the merger as an opportunity to strengthen its finances and accelerate innovation. “Making amazing cameras for all of you is our core DNA and reason for being and that will never change,” he said. Woodman said Starman shared GoPro’s enthusiasm for its brand and products, adding that the proposed deal was expected to…
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Christian Castro has pleaded not guilty to six federal counts alleging he made false statements about a shooting in Minneapolis during the Operation Metro Surge immigration crackdown. Castro appeared before a federal court in Texas on Friday after surrendering to authorities the previous evening. He was released on an unsecured $75,000 bond and ordered to wear a GPS ankle monitor. The allegations concern the shooting of Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis, who was wounded in the leg outside a home in north Minneapolis on 14 January. Prosecutors say Castro fired through the front door as Sosa-Celis…
Nigel Farage has been forced on to the defensive by a Reform UK donations sting, after two senior aides were suspended over secretly recorded discussions about channelling money from a supposed foreign donor into British politics. The crisis overshadowed the party’s annual conference in Birmingham, where thousands of supporters gathered for Mr Farage’s keynote address as Reform’s lead in the opinion polls disappeared. Dan Jukes, Mr Farage’s chief of staff, and James Orr, the party’s head of policy, stepped aside after Channel 4 broadcast footage recorded during an undercover investigation by Verbatim, an investigative group founded by former Centre for…
Kevin Reddington made a last-ditch appeal on Friday to prevent a mistrial in Lindsay Clancy’s murder trial, after a Massachusetts judge said he was prepared to end proceedings when jurors failed to reach a unanimous verdict. Judge William Sullivan gave the defence one hour to petition the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court for an emergency stay, delaying the formal declaration while the application was filed. The move followed the jury’s third report that it could not agree after seven days of deliberations over whether Ms Clancy was criminally responsible for the deaths of her three children in 2023. Reddington had argued…
