A bar named in a civil lawsuit by a Cornell University student alleging she was raped by fraternity members has denied serving her alcohol or supplying drinks to anyone under the legal drinking age.
Jane Doe claims she was served alcohol “to the point of visible intoxication” before going to the Chi Phi fraternity. She was 20 at the time of the alleged rape, while New York’s legal drinking age is 21.
In legal documents, the bar denies “that it unlawfully sold, furnished or assisted in procuring alcoholic beverages to any person under the legal drinking age”. It also denies selling or providing alcohol to anyone who was visibly intoxicated.
The case includes a dispute between Ms Doe and defendant Matthew Ingles over how much she had drunk before their encounter.
Ms Doe is alleged to have said the following day: “You already knew when I came in I was 10 shots deep.” Mr Ingles responded: “You did tell me you were sober, by the way, you said you hadn’t been anywhere.”
