Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope is being considered by Bayern Munich as the German champions plan for life after Manuel Neuer.
Neuer, now 40, could leave at the end of the season, with Bayern increasingly viewing Jonas Urbig as their long-term first-choice goalkeeper. The club is understood to be examining experienced options who could provide competition, leadership and cover without blocking Urbig’s development.
Nick Pope on Bayern Munich’s experienced goalkeeper shortlist
Sky Sports Deutschland reports that Pope is among a group of senior goalkeepers Bayern are assessing. The list also includes Bernd Leno, Koen Casteels, Lukas Hradecky, Juan Musso and Rui Silva.
Bayern’s preference appears to be for a reliable goalkeeper capable of stepping into important matches when required, rather than another young player competing directly with Urbig for the position.
Pope, 34, would not be a long-term solution, but his experience makes him a potential fit for the role. He has made more than 100 Premier League appearances for Newcastle and helped the club return to the Champions League, recording 14 clean sheets during his first season on Tyneside.
The England international has also played European football, giving Bayern an experienced option should they decide to make an approach.
Any move would depend on whether Pope is willing to leave a regular starting role at Newcastle for a position that could become more supportive in Munich. His contract with the Premier League club is due to expire in 2027.
That situation could make his future a more immediate consideration for Newcastle, particularly if an extension is not agreed. For Bayern, Pope would offer proven experience while allowing Urbig’s expected progression to continue.
