Manchester United have been dealt a fresh Benjamin Sesko injury concern, with Slovenia manager Bostjan Cesar describing the forward’s latest problem as “atypical”. The 23-year-old is now a doubt for United’s return to Premier League action against Tottenham after the international break.
Sesko has struggled to start regularly since arriving at Old Trafford, although he has shown considerable potential when able to play. His latest setback represents another interruption to his progress at the club.
Benjamin Sesko injury raises concerns over recovery
Cesar said Sesko needed time to recover from the unusual injury, but did not provide a timeframe for his return. United are therefore expected to approach his rehabilitation carefully while assessing whether he can play any part in their upcoming fixtures.
Stephen Smith, the chief executive and founder of injury and performance analytics specialists Kitman Labs, warned that recurring problems can be particularly difficult to resolve.
“The risk is always there with recurrence. With injuries like this, you are playing a game of whack-a-mole,” Smith said.
He added that United’s medical staff would be expected to review their previous approach and consider alternative options, rather than simply repeating the same treatment.
“Given this has flared up again they will be inclined to be more cautious, not less,” Smith said. “Unless he responds incredibly quickly and very differently than last time around, I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a similar time frame and similar time lost as we saw last time.”
Sesko’s long-term prospects remain positive, but United will be wary of rushing his return and risking a further aggravation of the problem.
