A body has been found on Melbourne Beach, Florida, during the search for a 53-year-old bodyboarder who disappeared in dangerous surf, although authorities have not confirmed the person’s identity.
Jason Doyle went into the Atlantic near Ponce de Leon Park at about 9.30am on Sunday, 27 September, and did not resurface, according to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.
Doyle was riding a boogie board when he vanished beneath the water. His partner, who was on the shore taking photographs, called 911 after he failed to return.
The search continued into Monday, with boats and aircraft used to scan the waters off Melbourne Beach. The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, Brevard Fire Rescue, the US Coast Guard and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission all took part in the operation.
Officials said the area was experiencing dangerous surf and a high risk of rip currents when Doyle disappeared.
The body recovered on Monday has not yet been formally identified. The investigation remains under way.
