John Calipari has named Stephen Curry as the NBA star he believes could make the move into politics, suggesting the Golden State Warriors player has the qualities needed for public office.
Calipari was asked on Monday which basketball player he would like to see stand for election. The experienced coach immediately chose Curry.
He said Curry cares about people, is intelligent and energetic, and is prepared to speak out for the causes in which he believes.
Calipari did not limit his prediction to one particular role, saying the decision would be entirely Curry’s. He suggested the player could pursue anything from mayor or senator to the presidency.
The coach, who has taken six NCAA teams to the Final Four and has also worked in the NBA, even indicated that he already had a role in mind for himself should Curry reach the White House.
A political career would not be entirely unfamiliar territory for Curry. The Warriors superstar said in 2024 that he would not rule out entering politics after his basketball career, although he played down the prospect of a near-term presidential run.
Calipari’s endorsement leaves open the possibility of Stephen Curry in politics in the future, with the coach already imagining a path from the basketball court to the White House.
