Chelsea have stepped up their interest in Everton midfielder Harrison Armstrong, with the 19-year-old being monitored closely as Xabi Alonso considers ways to strengthen his midfield options in the coming transfer windows.
Simon Phillips reports that Chelsea are compiling regular scouting reports on Armstrong and have previously made contact with his representatives over a potential move to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea monitoring Harrison Armstrong
Armstrong has emerged as one of Everton’s most promising young players since breaking into the senior side. The England Under-21 international has made 32 appearances for the club, providing four assists.
The central midfielder’s technical ability, composure in possession and versatility have attracted interest from several Premier League clubs. He has continued to develop into an important member of David Moyes’ Everton squad.
Armstrong’s profile fits Chelsea’s focus on recruiting young players with significant potential. Alonso would also gain another technically gifted midfielder capable of contributing energy and creativity in the centre of the pitch.
Chelsea are assessing several midfield targets, with Newcastle United’s Lewis Miley, Fulham’s Josh King and Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly also being monitored.
Phillips said Armstrong was “another youngster that Chelsea are watching”, adding that the Everton player was featuring regularly and had “a lot of clubs watching him”.
Everton hold strong position over midfielder
Any attempt to sign Armstrong is unlikely to be straightforward for Chelsea. Everton previously considered a £40 million offer from Nottingham Forest during the summer, but the proposed transfer was abandoned after a strong reaction from supporters.
Armstrong remains under contract at Everton until 2028, leaving the Merseyside club in a strong negotiating position. Everton value the midfielder highly and there is little indication they would welcome another approach for his services.
Chelsea are expected to continue tracking Armstrong’s progress through their scouting network, although Everton’s determination to retain the academy graduate could make any negotiations difficult.
