Chelsea are preparing an improved long-term contract for Josh Acheampong as they seek to secure the defender’s future at Stamford Bridge beyond 2029.
The 20-year-old is already under contract with the club until 2029, but interest from Liverpool, Arsenal, Newcastle United and Bournemouth has encouraged Chelsea to act before speculation intensifies.
Acheampong’s rapid progress over the past year has seen him move beyond his status as an academy prospect. He is now regarded as a genuine first-team player, with Chelsea determined not to lose a player they believe can become a long-term starter.
Chelsea plan extended deal for Josh Acheampong
The proposed new terms could extend Acheampong’s stay until 2032 and would represent a significant reward for his emergence in the senior squad.
Several clubs made enquiries during the summer, while Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Napoli have also registered interest in the defender over the past 12 months. Chelsea have nevertheless made clear that they have no desire to sell him.
Xabi Alonso is understood to support the contract discussions and sees Acheampong as an important part of his plans. The defender’s ability to operate at centre-back, right-back and in other defensive positions has strengthened his appeal.
Alonso previously praised Acheampong’s qualities, saying: “When he plays with confidence and aggressiveness, he has a lot of attributes for a modern defender.”
The Chelsea manager also highlighted the youngster’s comfort in possession and his capacity to perform in different roles across the defence.
Acheampong’s athleticism and technical ability have helped him adapt to senior football, while his age leaves scope for further development. Chelsea believe improving his contract is the clearest way to protect that investment and keep a highly-rated Cobham graduate at the club.
