Chelsea regard Estevao Willian as a long-term cornerstone despite concerns over his reduced role under new manager Xabi Alonso, with the club reportedly considering an improved contract for the Brazil international.
The 19-year-old made a strong impression during his first season at Stamford Bridge and remains highly valued internally, even though he has not yet established himself as a regular starter under Alonso.
The Daily Telegraph reports that Chelsea have no major concerns about Estevao’s mood and believe his desire is simply to play more often. The winger is understood to remain part of the club’s group of untouchable young players.
Estevao’s position has nevertheless become more complicated following the arrival of Morgan Rogers, who joined Chelsea in a club-record £117 million deal. Alonso has so far favoured an attacking structure built around Rogers, Cole Palmer and João Pedro.
The new head coach’s preferred system, which has often featured two attacking midfielders behind a central striker, does not appear to offer a natural role for Estevao on every occasion. However, Alonso has indicated that he is prepared to adapt his approach during the season.
Estevao has been restricted to 96 minutes across Chelsea’s opening four matches of the campaign, with 80 of those minutes coming in the Carabao Cup victory over Luton Town.
Alonso played down suggestions that the winger was unhappy at the club before Chelsea’s meeting with Leeds. He said Estevao had shown a “very good attitude” in training and insisted he would be important because of his potential and his willingness to learn.
Estevao remains central to Chelsea’s long-term plans
The teenager is already tied to Chelsea until 2033, meaning the club are under no immediate pressure to renegotiate his terms. An improved agreement would instead represent a show of faith in a player they believe can become one of the leading figures of their next generation.
Estevao’s explosive dribbling and direct style have led to comparisons with Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. Jorrel Hato previously suggested that Yamal was the only teenager he had seen perform at a similarly high level.
Whether Estevao can secure a comparable pathway remains uncertain, particularly given the competition for places at Chelsea. But despite his current lack of starts, the club’s reported stance is that he is not available for sale and remains firmly part of their plans.
