Washington DC is set for a bright but chilly autumn day on Tuesday, with clear skies and afternoon temperatures reaching the mid-60s after a cold start.
Cooler air has moved into the capital region behind Monday’s cold front, with north-westerly winds expected to make early-morning conditions feel particularly brisk across the District, Maryland and Virginia.
The National Weather Service is forecasting sunshine and highs of about 66F, with winds easing during the afternoon. The temperature remains well below the typical October high of 74F.
High pressure building behind the front should keep the weather settled through the rest of the day. Skies will remain clear on Tuesday night, although temperatures are expected to fall into the low 40s.
Warmer conditions will return on Wednesday, when sunny skies and southerly winds are forecast to push temperatures into the low 70s. The gradual rise will continue towards the end of the week, with highs approaching the upper 70s on Thursday.
The next meaningful chance of rain is expected on Sunday, when showers could develop as moisture moves north from a developing weather system. The unsettled conditions may continue into Monday morning before milder, more settled weather returns.
