The scale of the Democratic “blue wave” in the US elections has left Donald Trump and the Republican Party facing a decisive rejection from voters, according to North America correspondent Michael Koziol.
Mr Koziol said the result showed that Americans had turned sharply against both the former president and his party. But he argued that Mr Trump appeared largely unmoved by the electoral rout, deflecting rather than acknowledging its significance.
“Trump is living in a bubble,” Mr Koziol said. “His fellow Republicans must surely now burst it. They must take back control.”
The size of the defeat could ultimately benefit Republicans by accelerating a break with Mr Trump and limiting his influence over the party’s future, he said.
Vice-President JD Vance may now face a difficult task in positioning himself as the next figurehead of the Republican Party.
