Manchester City are facing growing concerns over Phil Foden’s form after the midfielder was sent off during Sunday’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Foden was dismissed in the 23rd minute after kicking out at Bruno Fernandes. City held on for all three points, but the incident intensified scrutiny of a player who has struggled to consistently reproduce his best performances over the past two seasons.
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown believes Foden still has the backing of City, despite increasing doubts about his long-term level.
“Phil Foden is still a very talented player and they want to see him get back to his best,” Brown told Football Insider.
“That’s why he’s still playing every week, they want to give him the platform to perform and show he can still be the Phil Foden we all got used to seeing before the last couple of years.
“But there’s no doubt he’s a million miles off of the player he used to be and he’s got to redeem himself and prove himself again.
“He’s got all the talent in the world so it’s still a possibility for him, but Man City are worried about him because over the last 12 months to two years he hasn’t been the same player.”
Pressure increases on Phil Foden
Foden’s red card did little to settle those concerns. Opta noted that he became only the second Manchester City player to be sent off against Manchester United in the Premier League, following Bernardo Corradi in 2006.
Writing off the 26-year-old would be premature, given his status as one of England’s most naturally gifted players. However, City will expect more from a footballer who has previously shown he can influence important matches.
The suspension will further delay his efforts to rebuild momentum, with Foden set to miss three domestic matches. City’s competition for places also remains intense, with Iliman Ndiaye making an impact after coming on at half-time in the derby, completing six dribbles and winning five fouls.
