Frankie Muniz has spoken about “hitting rock bottom”, describing the past six weeks as a “nightmare” and saying the experience has forced him to confront parts of his life he wants to change.
The 40-year-old Malcolm in the Middle actor and professional stock car racing driver shared the candid message on Instagram, writing: “The last 6 weeks of my life have been a nightmare I’m praying to wake up from.”
“Everything felt heavy, unclear, and like it was falling apart at the same time,” Muniz continued. “I wouldn’t wish this season on anyone.”
He said the difficult period had also given him an opportunity for honest self-reflection, adding: “The unexpected gift in the middle of it is that I’ve had nowhere to hide.”
Muniz said he had been able to identify “the areas of my life that need work” if he was to become “a better version of me”, rather than simply presenting “the polished version I show the world”.
Reflecting on the experience, he wrote: “I read that sometimes hitting rock bottom is the thing that wakes you up. It forces the changes you needed to make all along so you can live the best life possible.”
He said he believed that, in five years, he would look back on the period with gratitude because it would have contributed to the life he was able to build afterwards.
Muniz also sought to encourage others who may be struggling, writing: “This isn’t the end of the story. It’s the part where I start doing the work…the uncomfortable, unglamorous, necessary work.”
“I’m choosing to treat this season as the foundation, not the finish line,” he added. “If you’re in a low place right now too, you’re not broken. You’re being rebuilt. Let’s keep going!”
His comments come after a difficult period in his personal life. In July, Muniz announced that he and his wife, Paige Price, had split after 10 years of marriage. Last month, he also mourned the death of his frequent co-star Hayden Panettiere.
