Houston family doctor Dr Joseph Montes has been arrested by the FBI after being federally indicted over more than $20 million (£15.1 million) in alleged fraudulent Covid-19-related Medicare claims.
Montes appeared in federal court on Monday, according to the FBI’s Houston office. Officials said he faces three federal charges, although the precise allegations have not been publicly disclosed.
The indictment relates to claims submitted to Medicare during the coronavirus pandemic. The FBI has not said how Montes is alleged to have been involved in the claims or whether anyone else has been charged.
Montes is a family medicine doctor in Houston. The allegations have not been tested in court, and an indictment is not a finding of guilt.
