Youth-led protests across Germany drew tens of thousands of people on Saturday, with demonstrations in several major cities later descending into violence and police using water cannon against people throwing Molotov cocktails.
The rallies were organised by Gen Z regelt, meaning “Gen Z has got this”, and took place in Frankfurt, Berlin, Cologne and Hamburg. Several police officers were injured during the unrest.
The protests, inspired by similar movements in France and Italy, were largely peaceful during the day. Tensions rose in the evening when groups of young people refused to disperse.
Gen Z regelt said about 120,000 people had taken part nationwide, fewer than the roughly 180,000 it had expected.
