Liverpool are accelerating plans for a defensive rebuild, with Borussia Dortmund captain Nico Schlotterbeck and Nottingham Forest defender Murillo among the leading centre-back targets being considered.
The club’s long-term planning has been shaped by uncertainty over the futures of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez. Liverpool are seeking defenders capable of handling physical demands, defending space behind a high line and helping to build attacks from deep in a possession-based system.
Schlotterbeck and Murillo lead Liverpool defensive rebuild shortlist
Schlotterbeck remains a prominent option despite signing a new contract with Borussia Dortmund earlier this year, according to Daily Briefing. The Germany international’s deal runs until 2031.
The 26-year-old has emerged as a leader at Dortmund and now captains the club. His left-footed passing, willingness to step into midfield, strength in duels and aerial ability are viewed as qualities that would suit Liverpool’s requirements.
His contract is reportedly understood to include a release mechanism worth between €50 million and €60 million for selected clubs from summer 2027. Dortmund have otherwise been linked with a valuation in excess of €70 million.
Murillo offers a different profile but is also highly regarded. The 24-year-old has already established himself in the Premier League, combining recovery pace with aggressive one-on-one defending and the ability to carry or pass the ball out from the back.
Forest have no intention of allowing Murillo to leave in January. He is under contract until 2030, leaving the club under little financial pressure and meaning a substantial offer would be required before its position was reconsidered.
Liverpool have not made a formal offer for either player. Their work remains focused on scouting, performance analysis and assessing the conditions that could be needed for negotiations at a later stage.
Schlotterbeck is considered the more natural stylistic successor to Van Dijk, with his distribution and leadership particularly suited to the role. Murillo, meanwhile, would bring experience of the pace and physical demands of English football, as well as the speed needed by centre-backs defending high up the pitch.
Alessandro Bastoni of Inter Milan and Barcelona’s Jules Koundé are also admired as Liverpool assess their options at the heart of the defence.
