Arsenal are reportedly considering a move for Atletico Madrid winger Alex Baena as Mikel Arteta plans further attacking reinforcements for next summer’s transfer window.
The 25-year-old Spain international has emerged as a potential target after establishing himself as an important member of Diego Simeone’s side. Atletico, however, are understood to be determined to retain one of their key attacking players.
Arsenal interest in Alex Baena
Baena has made an impact with five goals and three assists this season, underlining his influence in the final third. His creativity, technical ability and versatility are believed to have attracted Arsenal’s attention.
The former Villarreal player generally operates on the left flank but is also capable of playing as an attacking midfielder. That flexibility could offer Arteta additional tactical options, while his ability to unlock defences would add another dimension to Arsenal’s attack.
Baena’s performances for Spain during their World Cup triumph this summer have further enhanced his reputation and increased his appeal to leading European clubs.
Any attempt to sign him in January appears unlikely. Atletico do not want to lose the winger during the campaign and have no intention of considering offers in the winter transfer window.
The Spanish club have Baena under contract until 2030 and regard him as a central part of their long-term plans. Simeone is also keen to keep the player, leaving Atletico under no financial pressure to negotiate a departure.
Arsenal are therefore expected to wait until next summer before considering a formal approach. Even then, they face a difficult negotiation and would likely need to make a substantial offer to persuade Atletico to sell.
