Liverpool have been offered the chance to complete the permanent signing of Ronald Araujo in January, with Barcelona reportedly willing to bring forward the defender’s departure.
Araujo joined Arne Slot’s side on a season-long loan during the summer, with Liverpool holding an option to buy the Uruguay international for €55 million (£47 million). Reports claim Barcelona have now approached the Premier League club about turning the temporary arrangement into a permanent transfer ahead of schedule.
The 27-year-old has made 13 appearances since moving to Anfield and has provided cover at both centre-back and right-back. His physical strength, pace when recovering and experience in European competition have made him a useful addition to Liverpool’s squad.
Liverpool considering permanent Ronald Araujo transfer
Liverpool are understood to be pleased with Araujo’s performances and open to retaining him beyond the current season. The defender is also reportedly interested in continuing his career on Merseyside, potentially making discussions between the clubs more straightforward.
Barcelona are looking to raise funds through the sale as they seek to reinforce their own defence. The Spanish club are particularly keen on adding a left-sided centre-back, with Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez reported to be among their potential targets.
The financial terms remain central to any agreement. Liverpool are said to favour a deal in the region of £40 million to £45 million, although Barcelona’s own requirements may restrict the size of any reduction from the existing purchase option.
Negotiations are reportedly already under way, giving Liverpool the opportunity to secure Araujo several months earlier than originally planned if the two clubs can reach an agreement.
