Manchester United’s pursuit of Fermín López has suffered a significant setback after the Barcelona midfielder made clear that he wants to remain at the Catalan club for the rest of his career.
The 23-year-old has emerged as a reported option for United as they consider potential long-term replacements for Bruno Fernandes. However, López’s latest comments suggest that persuading him to leave Barcelona would be an extremely difficult task.
Fermín López responds to Manchester United interest
Asked about the Manchester United links, López said: “Manchester United links? I don’t pay attention to that kind of news. I want to stay here at Barça as long as possible”.
He went further by expressing his desire to finish his career at the club, adding: “I hope to END my football career at this club and retire here”.
The midfielder made the remarks after playing a key role in Barcelona’s 6-1 victory over Alavés. López scored once and supplied two assists, before kissing and pointing towards the Barcelona badge after finding the net.
United’s interest is understood to be genuine, with López viewed as a player capable of adding goals and creativity to midfield. His value has been estimated at around £70 million.
Fabrizio Romano has also reported that Barcelona regard López as “absolutely untouchable”, with sporting director Deco considering him important to the club’s present and future.
Manchester United may need to consider alternatives
López’s versatility would suit United’s requirements. He can operate as a No. 10, in central midfield or in a wider position, while his goalscoring and aggressive pressing would offer further qualities.
But with the player publicly stating his wish to remain at Barcelona, United may have to focus their attention elsewhere. The club already have several areas of the squad to address, including striker and defence, while financial restrictions could make a prolonged pursuit particularly difficult.
Unless López changes his position, Manchester United may keep him on their long-term shortlist but look for more attainable targets in the immediate future.
