Malaga are considering a move for former Manchester United forward Anthony Martial as they search for attacking reinforcements in the free-agent market.
The 30-year-old has been without a club since leaving Monterrey in June and is able to sign outside the transfer window. He is now assessing his next move after difficult spells with AEK Athens and the Mexican side.
Malaga weigh up Anthony Martial move
Mundo Deportivo reports that Malaga are seriously examining Martial’s availability. The club’s interest has been heightened by the long-term injury suffered by Julen Lobete, which has forced them to look beyond the usual transfer market.
Initial contact has taken place, according to SUR in English, although the discussions have not yet developed into formal negotiations. A gap remains between Martial’s financial expectations and what Malaga can currently afford.
Martial has previous experience of Spanish football, having spent part of the 2021-22 season on loan at Sevilla. A return to La Liga is understood to appeal to the Frenchman.
Other options are also being considered. Two unnamed Ligue 1 clubs have reportedly made offers, while Everton have been linked with a possible return to the Premier League.
A chance to rebuild in Spain
For Martial, regular football could be central to any decision. Injuries and inconsistency have repeatedly disrupted his progress since his time at Old Trafford, despite the talent he showed during his Manchester United career.
Malaga could offer him a defined role and an opportunity to regain confidence away from the pressure of a major European club. However, he may have to accept a substantial reduction in salary if the move is to become realistic.
The Spanish club would be taking a risk on a player who has not produced consistently in recent seasons, but his status as a free agent gives them the chance to pursue a potentially influential signing without a transfer fee.
