A rock formation collapse in Cappadocia has killed at least two people and injured another, Turkish officials said, after part of a volcanic structure fell in the Göreme region.
The formation, known as a “fairy chimney”, came down during Turkey’s Republic Day holiday, when the popular tourist destination was expected to be crowded with visitors.
Medical and rescue teams were sent to the scene, while crews continued searching the debris for anyone who may still be trapped.
Cappadocia Governor Hüseyin Kök said recent heavy rain was likely to have caused the collapse. The nationalities of those killed were not immediately known.
Cappadocia, in central Turkey, is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site known for its distinctive rock formations and ancient underground cities. It is among the country’s most visited tourism destinations.
