Liverpool are reportedly monitoring AZ Alkmaar midfielder Kees Smit after club officials watched him during the Europa League meeting with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
Smit featured for AZ in their defeat in England, giving Liverpool’s representatives an opportunity to assess the young Dutchman in person. The midfielder is also believed to have attracted interest from Manchester United and Chelsea.
Liverpool’s interest may now be advancing, with reports suggesting Smit could be available for about €60 million. However, he has yet to prove himself in the Premier League, which could make the 19-year-old a more realistic option than established alternatives.

The Merseyside club made few changes in midfield during the summer after prioritising reinforcements in attack and defence. Their interest in Smit reflects a desire to strengthen an area that has not undergone the same level of rebuilding.
Crystal Palace and England midfielder Adam Wharton is another player being considered, although Chelsea are also understood to be serious suitors for him.
Smit’s emergence has also coincided with uncertainty surrounding Alexis Mac Allister’s future at Anfield. The Argentina international has spoken about not being offered a new contract, although he has shown signs of returning to his best form in recent weeks.
Liverpool could therefore view Smit, or potentially Wharton, as a possible long-term midfield upgrade, but there is no indication that a deal for the AZ player has been agreed.
