Manchester United have reportedly made contact with Didier Deschamps as uncertainty grows over Michael Carrick’s position and the club’s prospects of appointing Unai Emery.
Deschamps has been without a club or international role since leaving his position as France manager after the 2026 World Cup. A report from Foot Mercato claims United have approached the 58-year-old, although he is understood not to be in a hurry to take on his next job.
The former France boss is therefore said to have shown little urgency in discussing a possible move to Old Trafford. United’s interest comes as doubts continue over Carrick’s future in the managerial role.
Emery had emerged as another potential option, but the Aston Villa manager is reportedly in advanced talks over a new contract with the club. That could leave United considering alternatives if they decide to make a change.
Would Didier Deschamps suit Manchester United?
Deschamps would bring considerable experience to the role, having guided France to World Cup success. However, he has not worked in club football since his spell as Marseille manager, which ended in 2012.
The demands of managing Manchester United on a daily basis would represent a significant change from international football. The club has endured a difficult period since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement and would face pressure to get any new appointment right.
Deschamps has operated under intense scrutiny with France, but club management brings different responsibilities and requires constant involvement with players and performances.
He would also inherit a United squad that lacks the depth of world-class talent available to him with France, including Kylian Mbappe and Michael Olise. For now, the reported approach appears unlikely to develop into an appointment.
