Melania Trump has reportedly complained to close advisers about Donald Trump’s deportation policy, saying people she knew were being removed from the United States.
The First Lady is said to have raised her concerns over the past year, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. The report said she was angry that some people known to her were facing deportation.
Her objections reportedly led Donald Trump to tell advisers that Stephen Miller, the White House deputy chief of staff for homeland security, had gone too far in pursuing a policy aimed at arresting and deporting every undocumented immigrant in the country.
However, the President is also said to have backed Mr Miller’s aggressive immigration tactics in conversations with aides at other times.
Republicans in Texas and Florida have reportedly expressed private opposition to Mr Miller’s hard-line approach and raised their concerns with the White House.
Immigration has remained a divisive issue during Mr Trump’s second term, with Immigration and Customs Enforcement facing criticism over its handling of operations against undocumented migrants. Some confrontations have ended in violence and death.
