Luke Shaw is reportedly not close to agreeing a new Manchester United contract, leaving his future at Old Trafford increasingly uncertain beyond the end of the current season.
The defender’s existing deal is due to expire in the summer of 2027, with no indication at present that he will remain at the club. A report in the Daily Mail suggests Shaw could eventually leave United on a free transfer.
Luke Shaw’s Manchester United future
Shaw joined United from Southampton in 2014 after establishing himself as one of English football’s most promising young defenders. His time at the club has since been disrupted by recurring injury problems, although he has produced high-level performances when fully fit.
The 31-year-old has made more than 300 appearances for United and won medals in the Carabao Cup and Europa League. He has also earned 34 England caps, scoring three times, including in the Euro 2020 final against Italy.
United’s decision will be influenced by their options at left-back. Patrick Dorgu is viewed as a strong alternative in the position, while the club have also been linked with interest in Lewis Hall and Alejandro Balde.
Shaw’s prolonged fitness issues, alongside the managerial changes and wider difficulties of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, have complicated his spell at Old Trafford. However, the lack of progress over a new contract indicates that his long association with Manchester United may be approaching its conclusion.
