The Chicks used their election night concert in Los Angeles to send a message to Donald Trump, unfurling fans reading “F*** Trump” as they celebrated projected Democratic victories across the US.
Natalie Maines, Martie Maguire and Emily Strayer performed at the Dolby Theatre on Tuesday, November 3, during the group’s Taking the Long Way 20th anniversary tour. The trio had been due to play the tour’s final show that night, while the second-to-last concert was rescheduled for Wednesday, November 4.
Welcoming the audience, Maines described the occasion as “our blunami night”, telling fans: “So glad we could enjoy this night together.”
She also told the crowd: “Texas is blue, the Senate is blue, the house is blue. This was gonna be a very different night if that wasn’t the case.”
The term “blunami” referred to a projected “blue tsunami”, with Democrats expected to take control of both the House and the Senate after the midterm elections.
The Chicks also performed “Not Ready to Make Nice”, the Grammy Award-winning first single from Taking the Long Way. The 2006 album won five Grammys in 2007, including Album of the Year and Best Country Album, while the song received awards for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
The trio have been vocal opponents of Donald Trump and the Republican Party for years. Maines also attracted attention in May after delivering an anti-Trump rant.
