Donald Trump has said he will accept the 2026 midterm election results and is willing to work with Democrats, as the party was projected to win the House of Representatives and potentially the Senate.
Speaking to The New York Times, the president said he was prepared to cooperate with Democrats once the final results were known.
“I am absolutely willing to accept those results,” Mr Trump said. “We’ll work with the Democrats, and we’ll, you know, look forward to working with them. We’ll probably work something out.”
His comments came as he followed the results, with Democratic gains projected in both chambers of Congress.
Mr Trump also wrote on Truth Social that he “wasn’t on the Ballot” and claimed that, had he been standing, “we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!”
He said he had no regrets about endorsing candidates including Ken Paxton in Texas and Senator Lindsey Graham’s sister, Darline Graham, in South Carolina.
As results were being reported, Mr Trump remarked on Ms Graham’s defeat: “I’m just looking at these results as I’m talking. I see that Darline lost. Wow, that’s amazing. How do you think Lindsey would have done if he ran?”
