David Charvet has revealed the promise he made to his ex-wife, Brooke Burke, before becoming a father: that he would be a consistently present parent to their children.
The 54-year-old Baywatch actor discussed his decision to step away from acting during an appearance on the Sibling Revelry podcast, in an episode published on Tuesday.
Charvet said his own relationship with his biological father had influenced his approach to parenthood, although he described having had a stepfather who was always around.
“I promised Brooke at the time that I would be a very present father,” he said. “I didn’t have that. I had a great stepdad that was always around. My real father and I didn’t have that kind of relationship.”
Charvet and Burke share daughter Heaven Rain, 19, and son Shaya Braven, 18. He said he wanted to offer them a different experience from his own.
“I wanted to be the first person that they saw every morning. I wanted to be the last person that they heard at night before they went to bed. I wanted to be at every single event because I remember sometimes being in a situation where I was at my own events and, you know, I would look around and there wasn’t certain people there, which was tough.”
Alongside Baywatch, Charvet was known for starring in Melrose Place before taking a step back from the spotlight.
