Bodum USA is recalling 5.9 million French press coffee makers in the US after reports that their glass carafes can break and cause burn injuries.
The company has received 70 reports of carafes shattering, including 48 cases in which people were burned, according to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The recall covers models sold from 1974 to October 2026 through Amazon, Target, Walmart and other retailers. It includes eight-cup French presses and 12-cup Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper and Kenya models.
Regulators said the carafes can break unexpectedly if they have been cracked or damaged. Using metal spoons to stir coffee can cause such damage, the agency warned.
Bodum USA said: “While the rate of reported incidents involving carafe breakage during use is extremely low, especially considering that Bodum has sold millions of these products in the U.S. for decades, this recall will further encourage the safe use of our French Press Coffee Makers.”
The company is not offering refunds, a Bodum USA customer service representative told CBS News. Customers can instead contact the company to receive a plastic stirring spoon.
Safety regulators have advised owners not to use metal utensils with the coffee makers and to stop using any carafe that is cracked or damaged.
Consumers can contact Bodum USA on 888-879-8213 from Monday to Friday, between 8am and 5pm Eastern Time, or by email at Bodum3302@sedgwick.com. The recall number is 27-055.
