Chad Gilbert, the founding guitarist of New Found Glory, has died aged 45 after a years-long battle with cancer.
Gilbert died peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Sunday September 20, surrounded by family and friends, according to a joint statement from his wife, Lisa Cimorelli, and his bandmates.
“He left this world surrounded by friends and family and took his final breaths with his wife and mother by his side, just as he wished,” they said.
The statement added that loved ones had been with Gilbert in hospital, describing him as both a legendary musician and a devoted family man. He is survived by Lisa, their daughter Lily, his mother Jackie and his brother Brian.
New Found Glory guitarist remembered by bandmates
Gilbert co-founded New Found Glory in 1997 and remained the band’s lead guitarist for almost three decades.
His bandmates said his “guitar playing, songwriting, humor, and relentless drive” had helped shape the group throughout its career.
“While we are devastated to lose him, we are so grateful for the incredible life he lived, the memories we shared, and the brotherhood we had,” they said. “His influence will always be part of New Found Glory and his spirit will be felt on every stage we stand on, with every note we play.”
Gilbert had been open about his health problems in recent years. He was diagnosed with pheochromocytoma, a rare form of adrenal gland cancer, in 2021 and underwent surgery before the disease later returned and spread to other parts of his body.
Earlier this year, he underwent brain surgery after doctors discovered tumours in his brain.
Gilbert was previously married to Paramore singer Hayley Williams. The couple married in 2016 and announced their separation in 2017.
