Newcastle United have completed the signing of Matias Fernandez-Pardo from Lille for a reported £51m, making the Belgium international their eighth first-team arrival of the summer transfer window.
The 21-year-old forward has agreed a long-term contract and will wear the No 20 shirt at St James’ Park. Newcastle’s total spending this summer now stands at £262m, with the club valuing Fernandez-Pardo’s arrival on a similar level to Nico Gonzalez’s £50m move from Manchester City last week.
Newcastle’s official announcement did not disclose the transfer fee, but Lille confirmed that Fernandez-Pardo had left the club for the Premier League side.
Fernandez-Pardo scored eight goals in 41 appearances for Lille last season, helping the French club secure a third-place finish in Ligue 1 and qualification for the Champions League. He is capable of operating centrally or in wide areas, and has built a reputation as a direct, high-intensity attacker.
He was included in Belgium’s squad for the 2026 World Cup after previously switching his international allegiance to Spain. Fernandez-Pardo attended Spain youth training camps but never made a competitive appearance for the country before returning to the Belgian set-up.
The forward said Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle’s desire to bring him to the club played a decisive role in his move.
“I spoke to the head coach and he really showed how much he wanted me to be here,” Fernandez-Pardo told the club’s official channels. “In terms of my own career progression, it made complete sense to come, so I didn’t hesitate at all.”
Jaissle described the new signing as “a highly technical player with explosiveness in his game” who can score, provide assists and take on defenders.
European football expert Julien Laurens said the transfer was a smart move for Newcastle, highlighting Fernandez-Pardo’s pace, movement and pressing ability as qualities suited to Jaissle’s system.
His arrival is expected to allow Nick Woltemade to leave Newcastle on loan, with Juventus in direct talks over a temporary move for the German striker. The proposed deal is understood to be worth around £3.4m and would not include an option or obligation to buy.
Fernandez-Pardo becomes Newcastle’s latest major attacking addition as the club reshape their squad under Jaissle.
