Newcastle United are monitoring a potential move for Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton as the England international emerges as one of the leading names on the 2027 transfer market.
The 22-year-old stayed at Selhurst Park despite significant interest during the summer, but Palace are expected to face renewed pressure to sell over the next two transfer windows.
TeamTalk reports that Wharton could leave as early as January, although Newcastle have yet to make a formal approach. The club are understood to be waiting for indications that Palace would be prepared to negotiate before stepping up their interest.

Wharton’s standing has risen considerably since he joined Palace from Blackburn Rovers in January 2024. He has since established himself in the Premier League and earned four senior England caps, according to the Football Association’s official profile.
Palace are in a strong negotiating position, with Wharton tied to the club until 2029. His valuation is reported to be at least £75 million, meaning any interested club would need to commit significant funds to complete a deal.
Newcastle are believed to view Wharton as a natural fit for the next phase of their squad rebuild. His ability to dictate play from deep, retain possession and find progressive passes would offer a different profile in midfield.
The Magpies’ interest also reflects a recruitment strategy focused on players who can develop further while retaining substantial resale value. Wharton’s age and Premier League experience make him an attractive target despite the likely size of the fee.
Newcastle face stiff competition, however. Liverpool could offer the prospect of Champions League football and a clearly defined midfield role, while Chelsea have the financial strength to compete for one of England’s most highly rated young players.
For now, Newcastle are keeping their distance from formal negotiations. That position could change if Palace signal that Wharton is available, with the midfielder increasingly expected to become the subject of one of the major transfer battles of 2027.
