A 21-year-old man has been shot in the stomach by police after he allegedly pointed a firearm at officers during a confrontation in Glen Alpine, in Sydney’s south-west.
Emergency services were called to a property on Strathmore Place, near Mountain View Avenue, at about 12.25pm on Thursday following reports that a man had made threats.
Assistant Commissioner Stacey Maloney said officers were confronted by the man, who was allegedly carrying a firearm.
“He pointed the firearm at the police… it was a very dynamic situation,” she said.
The man was shot once in the stomach. Police officers provided first aid before NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived and took him to Liverpool Hospital in a serious condition.
A woman at the property was also taken to hospital after apparently going into shock. No injuries other than the shooting were reported.
One neighbour said she heard “a guy screaming continuously” after police arrived. The house is understood to be the family home of the man’s partner.
The man is not known to have a major criminal record or a history of domestic violence.
Detectives examining the property found clothing, including a flannel shirt, as well as slippers and a backpack, scattered across the front lawn.
A crime scene has been established, while a Critical Incident Team from Burwood Police Area Command will investigate the circumstances surrounding the police shooting.
The inquiry will be reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
Anyone with information has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
