The Fitzroy River in Rockhampton has been approved as the rowing venue for the Brisbane 2032 Olympics, Queensland Premier David Crisafulli has told parliament.
The Central Queensland site will also host para rowing, canoe sprint and para canoe events after passing an International Olympic Committee assessment, according to Mr Crisafulli.
“It’s official, signed, sealed and delivered,” he said on Thursday.
The Fitzroy River is a crocodile habitat, while the nominated venue had faced pressure over concerns about fairness, safety and sustainability.
Mr Crisafulli said the proposed Rockhampton flatwater course had received approval following a comprehensive independent technical assessment by “renowned marine engineering experts”. Representatives of World Rowing and Paddle Worldwide had also inspected the site, with the organisations endorsing it for the 2032 competition.
“Many have said it can’t be done … we reject that view,” Mr Crisafulli said.
“We back in regional Queensland — no ifs, no buts.”
The Games Authority will now move ahead with detailed planning, design and construction of the competition venue.
“Our commitment has been steadfast, and our message is clear: regional Queensland can and will host events on the world stage,” the premier said.
