Scarlett Johansson has spoken for the first time about her undisclosed role in The Batman Part II, admitting that the character was difficult to understand and pushed her beyond her usual comfort zone.
The 41-year-old Oscar-winning actress was reported nearly a year ago to be in final negotiations to join the sequel to 2022’s The Batman, which stars Robert Pattinson.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Johansson said the mystery role had caused her “a lot of existential angst” and proved unusually challenging to develop.
“It was very hard to figure out. I don’t know why, whether it was just the role or it was just where I am in my life, but it was just hard to crack it,” she said.
Her character has not been disclosed. Online speculation has included Andrea Beaumont, also known as The Phantasm, and Poison Ivy, although neither possibility has been confirmed.
Production on The Batman Part II was halted last month after director Matt Reeves stepped away to attend to a personal family matter. No further details were released.
Steven Soderbergh was subsequently reported to be helping to complete principal photography.
Johansson joins a cast that also includes Sebastian Stan, Colin Farrell, Andy Serkis and Jeffrey Wright, alongside Pattinson.
The Batman Part II is currently scheduled to be released in cinemas on 18 February 2028.
