Rescue teams have resumed the search for people missing after an avalanche on Mount Himlung in Nepal killed two Nepali nationals during severe weather.
At least 10 people were rescued after the avalanche struck the 7,126-metre peak in north-central Nepal on Sunday. The victims’ remains were flown to Kathmandu on Monday and taken to Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital.
Reports put the number still missing at around a dozen, while Tul Singh Gurung, president of the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association, said 14 expedition workers remained unaccounted for.
“Two bodies were found as rescuers worked until 6pm (12:30 GMT) last night,” Mr Gurung told the AFP news agency. “The search continues for 14 expedition workers who are still missing.”
Eight mountain guides are taking part in the operation, he added.
The avalanche struck while the workers were at a base camp preparing for foreign clients due to arrive to climb the peak during Nepal’s autumn climbing season, which began this month.
Heavy rainfall over the weekend also caused flooding and landslides in Manang district, where Mount Himlung is located. The Nepalese government has issued severe weather warnings across the country.
