The Sir George in Jugiong has been praised as a destination in its own right, rather than merely a convenient stop off the Hume Highway, combining the atmosphere of a historic pub with a rural retreat.
The sprawling hotel offers book-lined rooms, open fires and low lighting, creating a cosy setting for a menu that ranges from spice-laden fioretti fritti with fried curry leaves to a rich coq au vin.
In warmer weather, live music moves into the expansive garden, where the kitchen serves balloon-edged pizzas with crisp, biscuit-like bases. A parma is also available, but the pork cotoletta is singled out as a stronger choice, served with coarse sugo, cheese and a generous spoonful of whipped ricotta.
Dining is conducted on an order-at-the-bar basis, although the service is described as joyful. A gingerbread-style sticky date pudding provides a seasonal finish, while the wine list focuses on the strengths of the surrounding region.
The modern cabins add to the hotel’s appeal as an overnight stop on the drive between Sydney and Melbourne, giving travellers reason to stay rather than simply pause for a meal.
The restaurant was visited anonymously and paid for independently as part of the review process. Its most recent recorded visit was in 2025.
