A six-year-old boy who ran to a neighbour’s home after being stabbed during a deadly attack in Houma, Louisiana, has been praised for his courage after helping alert emergency services. Four adults were killed in the incident on Saturday, 12 September, while the child was the only survivor.
The boy suffered multiple stab wounds and was flown by Acadian Ambulance Service to a hospital outside the area. His father later said on social media that he was in a stable condition.
According to local reports, the child reached a neighbour’s back door at about 7.30pm. A man followed him, seized him by the shoulders and pushed him to the ground before striking him again, a neighbour told WWL-TV.
The family inside the property called 911. The boy then lost consciousness, while deputies responding to the emergency found four people dead at two nearby homes on Ashland Drive.
Six-year-old survivor praised for seeking help
Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office First Lieutenant Blake Tabor said the child’s actions showed remarkable strength despite the seriousness of his injuries.
“This kid is an amazingly tough kid, and you’d have to know the magnitude of the injuries that he suffered to really understand the level of fight this kid must have in him,” Mr Tabor said.
People close to the boy have described him as a “superhero” for making his way to safety and ensuring that help reached his family.
Investigators say the suspect and the victims were known to one another and that the attack was not believed to have been random. No motive has been released.
Kaegan Jude Solet, 47, of Houma, was taken into custody on 13 September and was later released from hospital care. The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office said on Wednesday that he had been booked into custody on four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder.
Solet is being held without bond. The sheriff’s office said he had been receiving treatment for injuries detectives strongly believed were suffered during the alleged attacks.
The identities of the four adults killed have not been formally released. Detectives continue to investigate the incident and have asked residents and businesses near Ashland Drive to provide any relevant security, doorbell or dashcam footage.
